The gloves are off — and so too the 2015 beauty crown.
The principals of the Miss Universe Jamaica pageant on Monday announced that Sharlene Radlein, the 2015 winner of the beauty contest, has been stripped of her title.
They said that Radlein’s actions have been “inconsistent with the culture of pageant”.
The decision to strip the 2015 beauty was made Friday, days before an announcement was made at a press conference at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.
The principals said they have “painstakingly sought to guide Ms Radlein in a manner which reflects the vision and ideals of the organization”.
“However, her actions have been wholly inconsistent with the culture of the pageant, both locally and internationally," the principals said,” they said.
Radlein, who resides in the US, on July 20, filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court of Jamaica in an effort to secure the prizes she said is due to her for topping the competition.
In the suit, she accused the organisers of failing to make good on the contract with her and is seeking millions in damages.
The lawsuit was filed against Mark McDermoth and Karl Williams — who are franchise managers — and Uzuri International Designs Ltd, who are exclusive holders of the Miss Universe beauty pageant in Jamaica.
Rädlein was selected winner of the competition on August 29, 2015.
In the suit filed by law firm Reid Burrell and Company, the claimant contended that in July 2015 she and the defendants entered into an agreement “whereby the defendants agreed to award the claimant a prize package valued at over J$2M to include a cash prize of J$1M, Dermoth Williams Couture Wardrobe valued at J$1,200,000, the Miss Universe Jamaica title, a scholarship at the New York Film Academy, a diamond watch courtesy of Diamond International, eye care products from Eye Q Optical, one year travel insurance from Axia, spa treatment courtesy of the Face place and gift baskets courtesy of Lasco Distributors” if she was selected winner of the competition.
