Known for being the patron saint and protector of Brazil, Nossa Senhora Aparecida is much sought after by the faithful who need help in a time of distress. It was found in the Paraíba do Sul River, in São Paulo, by fishermen João Alves, Felipe Pedroso and Domingos Garcia. During a fishing trip and after several unsuccessful attempts, they caught the image of a headless saint in the net. When they cast the net again, the saint's head was caught, and after that they had an abundance of fish. Nossa Senhora Aparecida began to grow in the region, spontaneously and popularly. Gradually, the new saint was venerated by miracles. In addition to the so-called miracle of the fish, the future patroness of Brazil would have been responsible for another miracle, this time in the life of a slave named Zacarias. As he passed a chapel dedicated to the saint, he asked to pray. It was then that Zechariah's fetters were broken and he was freed from his masters.

Blue in color, symbolizing the sky, the mantle is embroidered with delicate golden florals, which refer to royalty and indicate the saint's sovereignty over heaven and earth. It is also possible to observe the flags of Brazil and the Vatican united on both sides of the sacred mantle, indicating that Nossa Senhora Aparecida is patroness of Brazil, which is associated with the Vatican, being, therefore, a Catholic country and under the protection of the Queen of Brazil. The mantle of Nossa Senhora Aparecida, as well as the crown with which she was proclaimed “Queen of Brazil”, in 1930 were gifts from Princess Isabel. In the year 1904, Pope Pius X gave the order to crown the image in a solemn manner. The saint that was found in the river by the fishermen is kept until today in the sanctuary of Aparecida. In 1955 a major basilica began to be built and in 1984 the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) officially declared the Basilica of Aparecida National Sanctuary, being the “largest Marian Sanctuary in the world”.
